"RAKU" is an ancient method of fast firing pottery the Japanese invented. When we do it on "RAKU" NIGHT we go all out. We close off the whole block. We set up a Glaze Tent and several mobile RAKU Kilns. We have a BAND. The local restaurants donate food and we cook too so you will have a wonderful dinner and we will have drinks too. We let you select a new stoneware cup or mug to drink from and take home. You also select a unfired piece and take it to the glaze tent and glaze it your self. Then we put it into one of the RAKU kilns and fire it right before your eyes. It takes about 45 minutes and you can take it home with you. So get your piece and glaze it, then have dinner and listen to the band. We even have a moon walk for the kids. It is always a memorable night. The cost is $20.00 and where else can u get an evening of entertainment and food and drink for that price? Meet lots of interesting people too.
RAKU is made using low fire clay and glazes with a high metal oxide content (colorants). They can be heated rapidly and once they reach 1850F the glazes melt and are a liquid glass. At this point we remove the top of the kiln and pick up the glowing red pots with tongs and move then to a barrel with newspaper in it and QUICKLY close the lid. The paper burns and fills the chamber with carbon. The colorants in the wet glaze then spring to the surface trying to find oxygen molecules to mate with. This creates dramatic bright shiny glazes. Then after a few minutes we take them from the barrel and quench them in water. then they are ready to be washed and you can take them home.
