Interview with Cathy Broski
How long have you been doing ceramic work? I have been doing ceramic work since high school. I graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1990 and have been working with clay professionally in some capacity since.
Who or what inspires you? My inspirations come from many things, from nature to dreams.
What is your favorite kind of ceramic work?

My favorite type of ceramic work has an aspect of surprise.  I love when I find an unexpected detail or happy accident on a piece.  I am attracted to figurative work especially if there is an oddity about it.  I love found objects.  The worn surfaces, broken edges, tell a story of it's path in this world.  I like the idea of a cast off shard of sculpture or pot that is put behind glass or on a pedestal and made precious again.

How long have you been teaching? My first teaching job was actually a student teaching position in college. I've been teaching at the KC Clay Guild for over 10 years.
What skill level do you teach? I teach all skill levels.
Do you teach Wheel Throwing or Hand Building Techniques? The class is predominately wheel throwing although the majority of my own work is hand built.
What can students expect to learn from your class? Beginning students can expect to learn the basic of wheel throwing w/in the first 4 weeks: Centering, Pulling, Trimming / Footing and Glazing.  Students who work through the entire cycle will have finished pots at the end of the 4 weeks.  Advanced students are encouraged to bring their own inspirations and I will help them further their abilities. We explore all aspects of the project and problem solve.
What kind of atmosphere does your class have? The class atmosphere is energized by the students. Most students are self motivated and some have been with me for more then 10 years.
Is there anything  that makes your class special? This class has a special way of coming together to motivate and encourage others. We have created everything from large scale out door sculptures to sets of daily place settings.
Is there anything else you'd like to say to prospective students? Don't be shy! If you want to learn how to work with clay or to advance your current skills, come on down and have some fun with us!
